Another sunny afternoon spent in the veg patch, weeding out lettuce seedlings while Child A throws sharp and heavy objects off a nearby wall shouting “Attack the village!” I suspect he is re-enacting the siege of Menerbes in the XVIth century. The Luberon is studded with hill-top villages, all reeling from a violent past. Surely he wouldn’t be destructive just for the sake of it.
Anyway, from all that I’ve read on organic gardening it seems that the most important thing is to be weed-free. And though I can’t tell the difference between weeds and lettuce seedlings I think it’s better to be on the safe side. Better to sacrifice the crop and be weed-free. Probably.
